Atzo Nicolaï (56) is President of DSM Netherlands BV since 2011. He employs the more than 4000 employees of DSM in the Netherlands. Since 2012, he also is Chairman of the Board of the DSM Nederland Pension Fund.

In 2012, Atzo Nicolaï set up the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, DSM’s successful public private partnership with the Province of Limburg and Maastricht University. From 2012, the campus has now grown into a world-leading innovation location and home to a vibrant and fast-growing open community of groundbreaking companies and knowledge institutes employing over 2000 people and students. The Brightlands Chemelot Campus is closely linked to the Chemelot Industrial Park with another 6000 employees. The campus and the industrial park form Chemelot, a leading Industrial Site in the South of Limburg with over 150 companies and knowledge institutions with DSM as founding father and owner of the terrain. In 2013 he oversaw the creation of InSciTe, the research institute set up by DSM, Maastricht University and Eindhoven University of Technology.

Before he went to DSM he was a Dutch politician. He was the Dutch Minister for Government Reform and Kingdom Relations, State Secretary for European Affairs and member of the Dutch Parliament.

The first phase of his career was in cultural policy. From 1990 to 1998 he was Secretary General of the Netherlands Arts Council and of the Council for Culture.

Atzo Nicolai holds several board positions. He is member of the supervisory board of Eneco, Brightlands Chemelot Campus and of Chemelot Venture Fund, Vice chairman of the Association of the Netherlands Chemical Industry (VNCI), board member of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO/NCW) and Chairman of the Netherlands Society for the Protection of Birds and the Dutch Bach society.
